Less is more: Is a simple AM and PM routine often more sensible?
Share
In the world of skincare, it's often suggested that more steps automatically lead to better results. The reality? Many skin experts and dermatologists nowadays emphasize the exact opposite: skin minimalism. A deliberately simple morning and evening routine can be more effective and sustainable for many people than an overloaded plan.
But what does the skin actually need, and when? And why is "less" often more at nat and bam?
What does AM vs PM even mean?
The basic idea behind an AM (morning) and PM (evening) routine is simple:
- In the morning (day, nat), the focus is on protecting your skin.
- In the evening (night, bam), it's all about the skin cleansing, soothing and caring for it after it has been exposed to various environmental influences throughout the day.
During the day, UV rays, environmental stress, and dry air are constant factors. Therefore, a focus on light hydration and sun protection is recommended.
In the evening, however, the focus is on removing dirt, make-up and protective layers such as SPF – before the repairing care follows.
Why "less" is often better
1) Simple ≠ less effective
A streamlined routine consisting of a few, well-coordinated steps often allows your skin to function more consistently and reliably – without irritation from too many products.
- Avoiding irritation: Too many products can overwhelm the skin barrier. A reduced routine allows the skin to function more consistently.
- Clear observation: You can immediately see how your skin reacts to a product.
- Practicality for everyday life: If a routine only takes 5 minutes, you can actually stick to it.
Your daytime routine (AM): Protection & Hydration ☀️
Even though every skin is different, many best-practice routines show a similar basic structure:
- Gentle cleansing: A mild cleanser (low pH) removes excess products or sebum without drying out the skin.
- Hydration & light care: A light moisture-boost supports the skin.
- Sun protection (SPF): This step is considered crucial – protection from UV rays is one of the most important daily habits in skincare.
👉 Experts emphasize: SPF in the morning is not an optional step, but a fundamental building block of every AM routine.
Your Nighttime Routine (PM): Cleansing & Repair 🌙
In the evening, skincare products can be a little richer to support nighttime cell renewal.
- Cleansing: In the evening, the first step is to remove residues of sunscreen, make-up, dirt or environmental particles.
- Targeted care: A serum or ampoule to specifically support nighttime cell regeneration with powerful ingredients.
- Sealing: A barrier-strengthening cream prevents moisture loss overnight.
Tip: If you use stronger active ingredients in the evening (e.g., retinol or acids), then use smaller doses and apply them in a targeted manner.
Why consistency is more important than complexity
One of the biggest advantages of a simple routine: consistency. In short: You really do them every day – and that's what counts.
Complex routines with many steps may sound fascinating, but they are often not performed regularly or correctly. A simplified AM/PM routine is the opposite: it's practical for everyday life, easy to remember, and consistently applicable – even when you're on the go or short on time.
That's exactly why we created our nat and bam sets. They take the guesswork out of skincare and provide you with precisely the building blocks your skin needs day and night – nothing more, nothing less. Check them out!
