The 5 Most Common Skincare Mistakes and How to Fix Them

You take care of your skin regularly – and yet sometimes it doesn't feel the way you'd like it to? You're not alone. Most of the time, it's not about the products. It's about how we use them – or what we forget. Here are five mistakes almost everyone makes, plus what you can do instead.

✦ The most important at a glance
  • Sun protection SPF 30+ – daily, year-round, as the last step in the morning.
  • Oil dissolves oil: Oil cleanser first, then water-based cleanser – or a good balm.
  • Layering: from light to heavy – toner on damp skin, then serum, then cream.
  • Introduce new products individually – 2–4 weeks patience per product.
  • 청결: Towel, pillowcase, and brushes are part of the routine.

No sun protection in everyday life

☀️ 선크림 · The Non-Negotiable Sunscreen

This is probably the biggest and most underestimated mistake. Sunscreen often only goes into the holiday suitcase – yet UV radiation is active all year round. UVA rays penetrate even on cloudy days, in winter, and even through windows. The difference: UVB rays cause sunburn and are weaker in winter. UVA rays, however, remain constant. They penetrate deep into the skin and can affect the collagen structure in the long term.

What this specifically means: Skin that is exposed to UV radiation daily without protection can, over time, develop fine lines, uneven skin tone, and altered skin texture. These often only appear years later. Dermatologists largely agree on this point: consistent sun protection is one of the most effective daily measures for long-term skin health.

In Korea, daily sun protection – the 선크림 (Seon-keurim) – is not optional. It is always the last step of every morning routine.

✦ What you can do

Choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it every morning, as the last step of your routine, before going outside. Light gel formulas are suitable for oily or combination skin. Dry skin benefits from moisturizing textures that combine care and protection.

Important: SPF in foundation (cushion) does not count as full protection. The amount we apply daily is usually not enough in practice.

2

Incorrect or overly aggressive cleansing

💧 이중 세안 · Double Cleansing

The more foam, the cleaner – that sounds logical, but it's not true. Overly strong cleansers contain aggressive surfactants. Surfactants are active washing agents that dissolve dirt and oil. The problem: overly strong surfactants also remove natural oils that the skin actually needs. The result is dry, irritated skin – sometimes even more blemishes.

K-Beauty has a clever solution: Double Cleansing (이중 세안). The trick behind it: oil dissolves oil. Make-up, sunscreen, and sebum are oil-based – an oil cleanser binds them much better than a normal cleanser. After that, a water-based cleanser is used for sweat and fine dust. The result: truly clean pores, without stressing the skin.

If you don't like separate oil: cleansing balms or micellar oils combine both steps in one product. They become milky with water and are easy to rinse off – a practical alternative.

✦ What you can do

Double cleanse in the evening – or use a good balm that can do both. In the morning, a gentle cleanser with lukewarm water is usually sufficient.

3

Layering

💧 레이어링 · Layering in the correct order

Simply applying products one after another isn't enough. The order determines how well ingredients penetrate the skin. For example, if you apply a thick cream first and then a serum, you have a problem. The cream forms a layer that the serum can barely penetrate.

The K-Beauty rule is simple: from light to heavy, from liquid to solid. Toner first, then essence, then serum, then cream. Each layer prepares the next. And the crucial trick: apply toner to still slightly damp skin. Damp skin absorbs water-based ingredients faster and deeper.

This makes a real difference, especially with expensive serums: they only work as well as the skin can absorb them. Incorrect order means that a large part of the effect simply stays on the surface.

✦ What you can do

Remember the order: Cleanse → Toner on damp skin → Serum → Cream. Rule of thumb: thinner textures always before thicker ones. Wait briefly between layers – 30 to 60 seconds is enough – so each product can absorb before the next one comes.

4

Too many products at once

✨ 피부결 · Skin Texture

More products equal better skin – that sounds like a good deal. But it's not. If you try many new products at once, you have a problem: if your skin reacts, you don't know what caused it.

In addition: if an active ingredient is in several products without you realizing it, the amount on the skin adds up. This can lead to redness or irritation.

✦ What you can do

Start with three products: cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen. Introduce new products individually and wait 2–4 weeks. Redness or burning? Take a step back. Fewer products, consistently applied, often yield more than a full shelfie routine.

5

Forgetting the bathroom environment

🧼 청결 · Cleanliness as part of care

You cleanse your face – and then dry it with a towel that's been hanging for five days. Many people know this. A damp towel in the bathroom is warm, moist, and comes into daily contact with skin and hands. This makes it an ideal breeding ground for bacteria – which then go directly onto your freshly cleansed face.

Similarly with the pillowcase: it collects sweat, hair care residue, and dead skin cells at night. Another often overlooked point is make-up brushes and sponges that are rarely cleaned; they are also a common trigger for skin irritation and blemishes.

In Korean skincare, 청결 (Cheongyeol – cleanliness) is considered an integral part of the routine – not only on the skin but also in its immediate surroundings. Because the best in every product only unfolds on a truly clean foundation.

✦ What you can do

Change your face towel every 2–3 days – ideally, have a separate towel just for your face. After cleansing, pat your skin dry, don't rub it. Change your pillowcase once a week. Wash make-up brushes at least once a month. And: wash your hands before starting your routine.
